ADULT MINISTRIES & STUDY

We have several great options for Sunday morning studies this summer. Whether you are around every Sunday or only a few, there will be options you can always drop in and join!

Option 1:
Clergy and Congregation in Conversation: Room 211

Due to the popularity of last summer's “Stump the Pastor” we will be providing a similar opportunity this summer. Starting in June, you'll have the opportunity to meet with a different clergy-person each Sunday for conversations. Each pastor may come in with a topic of interest to him/her, or be available for your questions and interests.

Watch for the next newsletter with July and August topics by Pastors Denny Frank, Glen Robyne, Billy Bross, Jim Morin, Phil Klinger, and others!

Option 2:
June and July— Faith Building Families: Room 209
This class will be another “drop-in” style option this summer. Participants can choose from a variety of short booklets specifically targeted to life-issues you might be facing in your family, like becoming new parents, communication issues, handling anger in your home, discipline, divorce, single parenting, grand-parenting, blended families, grief, etc. Pamphlets are available to look through in the Narthex (you know, that area outside the Christian Life Center...that place we worship!)

Option 3:
Bible Between Times/Getting Acquainted with the Apocrypha: Library

How did Jewish sects like Pharisee, Sadducee, Essene, and Zealot groups develop?
Why was Jews of Jesus’ time so unhappy under Rome, the Great Pax Romana?
Why did Jews expect a Messiah to save them...and how?
How did Jewish scriptures get translated into Greek?

So many questions like these can be raised after finishing the last prophet of the Old Testament, Malachi, and realizing that it was 400 years before the events of Christ's birth. Lots happened in those years, and we have the writings to prove it.

Most Protestants don't realize there are some writings called the Apocrypha. This section of the Bible is usually not included in Protestant Bibles, but it is vitally important to study in order to better understand the “between-times” from the end of the Prophets to Jesus' birth. Pastor Lana will dedicate three weeks in June to this short-term study.

June 1 – The Rise of Greece and Spread of Hellenism
June 9 – The Great Revolt of the MacBrothers (1 Maccabees 1-7)
June 16 – Making Pacts for Pax with Rome (1 M. 8-16 and 2 M.)
June 23 – How a Mother Takes on the Beast (2 Maccabbees)
June 29: Family Worship Outside 9 am (no class)

Those of you with NRSV Study Bibles already have the Apocrypha. Pastor Lana has a limited number of Bibles with the Apocrypha available to borrow or purchase. Let her know if you'd like to reserve one! You can also find the Apocrypha on-line at sites such as BibleNet.net. However, reading ahead of time is not required.
