Spreading the good news of Jesus Christ & serving the needs of the community

Missions are at the heart of of First United Methodist Church in West Lafayette, Ind. The Missions and Social Concerns Committee  receives a portion of the church's operating budget to support 12 missions while United Methodist Women and our Children's Ministries support others. In addition, Missions receives 1 percent of the annual donations to this church. Missions allocates that income to support the Wesley Foundation at Purdue University.

We rely on contributions
to supplement this budget.

First United Methodist and Christ United Meth
odist Churches in Greater Lafayette provide backpacks full of food for children at  Edgelea Elementary School in south Lafayette every Friday to help them through the weekend.  Of  Edgelea's 600 students, 53 percent qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch programs. You can help by donating food or money so we can buy food from Food Finders or by  helping pack or deliver. Contact Jeanne Norberg, jnorberg@purdue.edu .

Other ways to  help feed the kids:
  • Find other groups or businesses that would like to partner with us.
  • Dedicated a birthday parties or Halloween to collecting food for Edgelea.

FUMC is one of a dozen churches in our community providing a safe harbor each evening for homeless families. We work with Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Lafayette four times a year to provide housing and support for families who are in transition. The families spend the night at Trinity and FUMC volunteers of all ages help provide the evening meal and overnight companionship and assistance. You can learn more about Family Promise on its website.

MOPS helps girls who find themselves trying to fill the role of "mom" while they are still growing up themselves. We are chartered by Mothers of Preschoolers International to provide a faith-based, supportive, nonjudgmental environment where teen moms can come together for support and encouragement. Teaching and activities are focused on the distinct needs of teenagers to help them become more self-sufficient, confident, mature, giving, and self-aware young women.

Lafayette Urban Ministry (LUM)
Lafayette Urban Ministry  is a non-profit ecumenical organization serving the disadvantaged in our community. Overnight volunteers are needed at LUM's homeless shelter year round.  Volunteers work 8:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. shifts and take turns staying awake. A shelter training session is held monthly in the shelter (top floor of the LUM building).  Registration is not required.

In addition, we have pledged $4,000 to LUM’s capital campaign. The foundation of our church has pledged to match that.

We also partner with St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church to sponsor LUM’s Jubilee Christmas for which we help disadvantaged parents select and wrap presents for their children. It is the community’s largest Christmas assistance program.

Habitat for Humanity

This non-profit, ecumenical housing ministry has built nearly 200 homes in Tippecanoe, Carroll and White counties. Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple houses with the help of the homeowner families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and are financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving fund to build more houses.

Wesley Foundation at Purdue University

The Wesley Foundation is a  campus ministry primarily for and by students, serving them and helping them to grow in faith and Christian leadership.  It is open to students, staff, and faculty from all denominations and faiths. The directors of Wesley, Lana and Glen Robyne, also serve our church as associate pastors.

These $50 scholarships help youth from First Church attend a week at camp.  Youth grow in their faith through a week in one of our four camp settings in the conference.

We address a consumer dilemma by buying coffee that is fairly traded, helping small-scale farmers in Latin America, Africa and Asia earn a fairer share of income, obtain access to credit and technical support, and gain a fair trade partner they can trust, Equal Exchange.

Fair trade spreads the bounty of a rich crop among those who grow the crop, rather than intermediaries who offer farmers the lowest possible prices.

Operation Classroom

This is a hands-on mission project of the Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church to strengthen education in some of the church's schools in Liberia and Sierra Leone. We construct cloth bags and fill them with specific school supplies. We send about 200 school kits to Tubman-Gray School in Liberia, West Africa. We also collect donations to cover shipping expenses as well as for scholarships.

The objective is to upgrade the educational program in each of the selected Operation Classroom schools and to help each school to become self-supporting as soon as possible. When the schools are upgraded to the level set by the department of education in each annual conference, new schools will be selected for assistance.
