On the morning of Saturday, November 4, 2023, a dynamic team of volunteers  in vibrant neon jackets, transformed the First United Methodist Church parking lot into a bustling hub of generosity. As cars lined up to donate essential items for those in need, volunteers geared up to venture into the community for the 21st annual Purdue Winterization, an event dedicated to assisting the elderly in preparing for the upcoming winter.

Purdue Winterization, now the university’s largest service project, originated in 2002 as an idea from a Wesley Foundation freshman. From a modest start of 35 Purdue students assisting 10 elderly homeowners with leaf raking, this initiative has blossomed into a significant movement, with over 1,400 volunteers mobilizing to serve 350 homes this year.

In the unfolding of the 21st Winterization, the collaborative spirit of volunteers resonated seamlessly with First Church’s steadfast commitment to community service and compassion. Various committees worked diligently to organize food, water, and cleaning supplies, ensuring a comprehensive response to the diverse needs of West Lafayette residents.

First Church is honored to play a pivotal role in supporting Purdue Winterization by serving as the central hub for this impactful project. Our active role involves not only collecting donations but also providing a warm and welcoming space where volunteers can gather for breakfast and lunch, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
