Pastor Kory Pritchett

Greetings friends,

I am excited to bring you good tidings from my life and ministry as the calendar draws to a close on my first year as one of your appointed pastors at First Church. Where has the time gone? It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the inclusion work coming out of General Conference, gearing up for We’re Out, or giving Elvis-themed blessings on Main Street.

By the time you read this, I will have finished my second class in the Indiana Extension Course of Study School (which I need to take to be eligible for reappointment each year). This term I took Bible 1 which focused on the Biblical canon, exegesis, and the books of Genesis, Amos, Mark, Zephaniah, and Philippians. While cranking out exegetical papers has not been the most fun I’ve ever had, one of our supplemental texts for the class was rather interesting: How the Bible Actually Works by Pete Enns, a Biblical scholar and host of the podcast The Bible for Normal People. In this book Pete explains to readers “how an ancient, ambiguous, and diverse book leads us to wisdom rather than answers” using his signature wit, sarcasm, and approachable writing style. I found this book fascinating as it tackled contradictions that exist in the Bible and gave readers a framework for viewing the Bible as path to wisdom rather than an instruction manual. It dovetails really nicely with the sermon series on Uncommon Wisdom we did in October, and I would be happy to lend my copy to anyone who is interested. It even comes pre-highlighted!

On a personal note, I plan on sitting out the next term of classes as Becca and I anticipate our first child arriving in January. We so greatly appreciate the love and support this community has already shown to our growing family! We are feeling excited, anxious, and everything in between, but there is no place we would rather be.

Thank you, First Church, for being who you are. It is a privilege to serve with such a talented and dedicated leadership team and a congregation that is engaged in our community. As we look toward the Advent season and 2025, I pray the hope, peace, joy, and love of Christ for you all.

Blessings,

Pastor Kory Pritchett
