Dear First Church Family,

There is so much going on in the life of this church that I am so excited about. We have been sharing news of new leadership in our family ministries, more learning and connection opportunities for all ages, and exciting ways our First Church family is at work in our community standing for love, peace, and justice. Every week it seems we have new people visiting to see who we are. Many of these visitors soon transition into committed members with regular attendance and participation in our life together. This is a testament to the ways people are finding belonging and community at First Church.

One of the projects that I am most excited about as we step further into 2025 is the refresh of our worship and community gathering spaces. As we completed the first phase of renovations with the Narthex remodel, our church leadership had been dreaming and praying that we would keep the positive momentum going and step into the next phase as soon as we discerned we were able to. Because of the generous support of church members and saints who have invested in this church and its future, the Governance Board and First UMC Foundation have worked to quickly turn this dream into reality. We are pleased to continue our relationship with KJG Architects and Simon Construction Company, who were excellent partners in our first phase transformation.

As we embark on the renovation of our sanctuary and activities center, we are reminded that these changes are about far more than aesthetics. They are symbols of our deep commitment to being a church that welcomes all people with the love of Christ. At First United Methodist Church of West Lafayette, our calling is to be a beacon of love, inclusion, hope, and belonging in a world that so often divides and excludes. These renovations are a tangible expression of that mission.

Our sanctuary is a sacred space where we gather to worship, pray, and grow in faith together. By making it more accessible—with a new chancel ramp, hearing loops, and other enhancements—we are ensuring that every person, regardless of ability, can fully participate in the life of our church. Similarly, our activities center is a place of fellowship, learning, and service. Its updates will help us continue to build relationships, nurture community, and welcome all who come through our doors.

As a Reconciling Congregation, we proclaim boldly that Christ’s love is for everyone. From an all-gender, accessible bathroom to improved spaces for gathering and worship, these renovations send a clear message: You belong here. In a time when exclusion is far too common, we are called to widen the circle, to open our doors wider, and to create spaces where all can experience God’s grace. May these changes be a sign of our ever-growing witness to the radical love of Christ.

Blessings,

Pastor Duane
