First United Methodist Church West Lafayette attended the 2025 Indiana United Methodist (INUMC) Annual Conference held June 4-7 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Anna Clark, a member of our First Church family and leadership, shares her reflection on the conference:
“I’ve previously shared my story about how disappointed I was in the United Methodist Church in 2019 when we failed to become a more inclusive church. In the six years since, I’ve been cautiously optimistic with the progress we were making across the conference and global church. This was my fourth Annual Conference, and for the first time I walked away finally feeling like the church has found its way again. The whole conference had a spirit of inclusion.
– We had sign language interpreters at every session.
– We had a designated accessible line for lunch pickups.
– We re-voted multiple times when a person had trouble working the technology and hadn’t been able to cast their vote before the ballot closed.
– We voted on resolutions to support our clergy through the lengthy and costly immigration process, and to translate our church paperwork into other languages to represented in our conference.
– We voted to create gender neutral bathrooms in all our conference camp sites.
– We spoke out against the attack on our higher education system.
– We tracked and published the demographics of every speaker throughout the conference to move us toward a better representation of all voices.
My list could go on and on. I’m proud of our progress and am hopeful for the work still to be done. It feels like a new day for the United Methodist Church. May it be so.”
