The following post is an update regarding First Church’s ministry work during the 2023-2024 school year supporting Klondike Elementary School provided by Pastor Denny Frank, Director of the Klondike Kids Club.

Hey First Church family and friends,

We would like to share with you the impact that you have made as we have moved forward in our ministry to “embrace the children, families, and staff of Klondike Elementary School (KES).”

The administration and staff at KES always welcome Read to Succeed volunteers. The goal is to place a volunteer with each teacher desiring one, in grades K-3. In third grade, children are tested on their reading proficiency for placement the following school year. United Way statistics show that each year since the implementation of Read to Succeed, third-grade reading scores have improved when volunteers like you participate in this program. To participate, volunteers spend a minimum of one hour weekly in the classroom. Additionally, our second goal has been to place volunteers with Klondike teachers in grades 4-5, if desired. To volunteer, go to the United Way website, search “Klondike,” and choose the day, time, and teacher you desire. Fill out your information. United Way will provide a background check at no cost to you and then contact you with additional details.

Did you know that 55% of our Klondike kiddos qualify for the school breakfasts and free and reduced lunch programs? That in and of itself speaks of the financial demands on many families. In Point West Mobile Home Community, the number is just over 90%. Volunteers in Coder’s Closet help to organize clothing donations as well as help children select clothing that is appropriate to the season and their needs. Children are referred by teachers and other staff members. As a faith community, FUMC has helped to stock the Closet with underwear, socks, mittens, and hats. Last year, at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, YOU provided 53 pairs of sneakers for boys and girls. Some of you have made donations of money to help purchase sneakers.

As a community of faith, YOU are making a difference in the lives of children just three miles down the road. Thank you!
