Consecration Sunday holds a special place in the life of First Church, offering an opportunity to reflect on our congregation’s journey, celebrate our growth, and renew our commitment to serving Christ through outreach and ministry. This year, on Sunday, October 20, we gathered for a day filled with meaningful fellowship, inspiration, and thoughtful consideration.
The day began with our 9 AM First Up and the 11 AM Celebrate services. We were blessed by guest speaker Pastor Alisa Isaacs-Bailey, who shared her powerful story as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and her deep calling to serve in the church. Alisa connected her journey with the history of the United Methodist Church (UMC), noting that she was born just one day after its creation on April 23, 1968.

Pastor Alisa reflected on how her life has intertwined with the UMC’s history and the notable events shaping its mission. Her narrative underscored the importance of inclusion, justice, and grace. She posed a thought-provoking question: “Can you imagine if I had grown up with a church like First Church?” This reminded us of the church’s transformative role.
Emphasizing the vital work of fighting for justice, Pastor Alisa challenged us to walk alongside Jesus and strive for a world of peace and justice. Her impactful final words were, “The work that you do here at First Church doesn’t just save souls; it saves lives,” encouraging us to extend our reach beyond the church walls to transform our communities.

The service also featured beautiful performances by the Aldersgate Bells Choir, directed by Kathy Lind, along with flutist Ellie Boyer and pianist Charis Vander Plaats. Their music added reverence and joy to the occasion, creating a reflective space for worship.
After the services, we gathered for a catered meal in the Activities Center. This time of fellowship allowed members of our church family to connect and share thoughts on the day’s events. While enjoying lunch, First Church staff shared inspiring ministry updates, reminding us how our connections strengthen our mission and enrich the life of our church.
